On August 27, YouTube announced that Amazon had officially joined its Shopping Affiliate Program, a move Bloomberg and other outlets picked up on September 1. Eligible U.S. creators can now tag Amazon products directly in their Shorts, long-form videos, and livestreams — so a viewer can watch a 30-second review and buy the item without ever leaving the video. YouTube called it a way to let viewers “buy the products they love from the creators they trust.” What it really means: your video feed is now a storefront.

The mechanics are simple. Creators pick from a catalog of Amazon products — Tubefilter described it as a “curated catalog of highly requested and trending products” — tag them in their content, and earn a commission when viewers buy. Amazon joins the affiliate program that YouTube already runs with other retailers, but Amazon is the big one: the marketplace with effectively everything, now embedded inside the most-watched video platform on earth. The shopping loop — see it, like it, buy it — just closed.
For shoppers, this is convenience with a price tag that is easy to miss. Every tagged purchase now carries a chain of costs: the creator’s commission, Amazon’s marketplace and fulfillment fees, the advertising that YouTube sold to get the product in front of you in the first place. None of that is charity — it is built into the price you pay at checkout. The product itself is usually the same factory-made goods you could buy anywhere; the marketing stack around it is what you are really funding.

I have nothing against creators earning money — good for them. But as a shopper, I would rather skip the layers. The same categories you see hyped in videos — electronics, sneakers, home goods, beauty tools — come out of the same factories in Guangdong and Zhejiang that supply Western marketplaces. Buying them through a shopping agent from Taobao, 1688 or Weidian cuts out the affiliate commission, the marketplace fee, and the brand markup. My agent purchases the items, stores them free for up to 300 days, sends real inspection photos, repacks everything into one parcel, and ships by EMS or courier. No influencer needed.

Video shopping is fun and frictionless — that is exactly why it will be everywhere soon. Just remember who is paying for all that convenience: you are. The alternative has been there all along: buy where the product is actually made, and keep the difference.
